01
Lead with member groups, not job titles
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
Job titles are user-written and inconsistent, the same physician might say "FP," "Family Doc," or "Family Medicine Physician." Member groups are self-selected and precise. Start with groups like Family Physicians Practice Opportunities, state AFP chapters, or Physician Practice Administrators Group.
02
Match format to funnel stage
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
FMX awareness → single image or video. CME sign-ups → Lead Gen Forms, which convert 2–3x better than external pages for cold professional audiences. FUTURE → video autoplay only.
03
Outcome-led headlines only
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
'Earn CME credits built for family physicians' beats 'ABFM Certification Resources' every time. Lead with what the physician gains, not what the product is named.
04
One headline per ad set
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
All sizes in one ad set share the same headline and CTA. A different headline = a different ad set. Mixing copy across sizes breaks your test signal and wastes production budget.
05
CTA must match where the viewer is in their journey
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
Member group audiences are cold, they've never seen AAFP ads before. Give them 'Learn More' or 'See the agenda.' Reserve 'Register Now' exclusively for warm retargeting audiences: past FMX attendees, CME engagers, and website visitors.
06
Video for the FUTURE initiative
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
Medical students and residents respond to mentorship stories and career outcome narratives, not event logistics. Use LinkedIn video autoplay to lead with a physician's career moment, not a conference schedule.

Audience Targeting Strategy

Member Groups · Company Industries

LinkedIn offers many targeting options, but not all are equal for reaching family physicians. Job titles are user-generated and inconsistent, the same physician might describe their role as "FP," "Family Doc," "Family Medicine Physician," or dozens of other variations. Member groups and company industries provide a cleaner, more reliable signal.

01
Member Groups
Preferred, highest targeting precision

LinkedIn member groups are self-selected professional communities. A physician who joined a family medicine group is actively identifying themselves, no inference required. This is the strongest targeting signal available on LinkedIn for AAFP's audience.
Groups to target for AAFPFamily Physicians Practice Opportunities · Illinois Academy of Family Physicians · California Academy of Family Physicians · Texas Academy of Family Physicians · Physician & Nurse Staffing Professionals · Physician Practice Administrators Group
02
Company Industries
Secondary layer when member groups are too small

Company industry targeting reaches professionals based on the type of organization they work for, standardized by LinkedIn, not self-reported. Healthcare & Medical Services and Hospital & Health Care are the most relevant industries for AAFP's physician audience.
When to useOnly when a member group audience is below 50,000. Layer company industries on top of the existing member group. Never use more than 2 audience types per campaign to maintain organizational clarity.
03
Job Titles
Avoid, user-generated and inconsistent

Job titles on LinkedIn are written by each member individually. The same role can appear as "Family Physician," "Family Medicine Physician," "FP," "Family Doctor," "Family Practice Physician," and dozens more. This fragmentation makes job title targeting unreliable at scale.
The ruleStart with member groups. If audience size is insufficient, add company industries as a second layer. Do not fall back to job titles, the inconsistency compounds the narrow audience problem rather than solving it.

01
Hook in the first 3 seconds
The opening moment determines everything, for video and static alike.
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
Open video with real FMX crowd footage, a physician speaking to camera, or a bold stat. For static: the image stops the scroll, the copy closes the deal. Generic stock will not stop a physician mid-feed.
02
Run at least 2 visually distinct formats
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
Post-Andromeda, two ads with the same visual aesthetic are treated as one. AAFP must run genuinely different visual worlds, different settings, creators, compositions.
03
Match message to where the viewer is in their journey
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
Cold audiences: 'Your people are already here, 130,000+ family physicians.' Warm retargeting (7-day site visitors, event engagers): 'Last chance to register.' Never reverse these.
04
Always include social proof
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
Real FMX attendee photos, member counts, CME credit stats, or physician testimonials. AAFP's physician audience is evidence-based, peer signals reduce friction more than any headline.
05
Ad copy must coordinate with the landing page
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
Every promise in the ad must be confirmed within the first scroll of the landing page. A 'last chance' FMX ad landing on a generic homepage will always have a high bounce rate regardless of creative quality.
06
Captions are no longer optional
Meta penalizes caption-free videos with lower delivery. Most physicians scroll with sound off.
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
Most physicians scroll Meta with sound off in clinical or professional environments. Meta now also penalizes caption-free videos with lower delivery. Add captions to every video before launch, not after.
Ad Specs & Dimensions

For every creative to be launched, it should be resized as a square (1:1), vertical (9:16), and landscape (1.91:1). So, three new creatives to be published would mean a graphic designer turns in a total of nine images.

Understanding Meta's Ad Delivery Engine

Andromeda · Lattice · GEM

Meta's ad delivery system is no longer a simple auction. It's a three-layer AI pipeline that decides which ads reach which people, in which order, at which moment. Understanding how these systems work together fundamentally changes how AAFP should build creative.

01
Andromeda
The Gatekeeper

Scans every ad using computer vision and assigns it an Entity ID based on visual pattern, not copy, headline, or CTA. Ads with the same visual aesthetic share one Entity ID and compete as a single unit. Making 6 headline variants of the same FMX static gives you one ticket to the next stage, not six.
For AAFP Every genuinely different visual open gets its own Entity ID and its own chance at delivery. Visual diversity is not a creative preference, it's how you buy more auction entries.
02
Lattice
The Unified Ranking System

Replaces thousands of siloed placement models (Feed, Reels, Stories, by geography, by objective) with one unified architecture that predicts multiple outcomes simultaneously across all surfaces and all funnel stages.
For AAFP Lattice decides where in the physician's journey each ad appears. Giving it diverse creative formats (video + static + carousel) expands the surface area it can optimize across, more placements, more funnel stages, more physicians reached.
03
GEM
The Personalization Engine

Generative Experience Model, Meta's LLM-based personalization layer. Uses trillions of behavioral signals to match the highest-probability creative to each individual, optimizing bids based on predicted conversions within your attribution window.
For AAFP An ad built for a medical student signals differently to GEM than one built for an established FP. Give GEM both creative inputs and it will serve the right one to the right person automatically. The more distinct inputs you supply, the better it can personalize delivery.

Best PracticesHover any card to see the AAFP-specific recommendation
01
Supply images in both required ratios
Horizontal 1.91:1 and square 1:1 are both required.
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
Upload at least one horizontal image (1200x628px) and one square image (600x600px) per asset group before launch. Missing either ratio means Google cannot fill all available placements and your asset group will be rated Low from day one.
02
Write headlines from different angles
Variety is how Google finds what resonates with your audience.
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
Five headlines that say the same thing give Google nothing to test. Write each from a different angle: one benefit-led, one stat-led, one brand-led, one urgency-led, one social proof-led. Same rule applies to descriptions.
03
Make sure at least one headline leads with a benefit
Brand names are fine in 1-2 slots. Benefits do the heavy lifting.
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
One or two headlines featuring the AAFP brand or product name is fine and can match search intent. But at least two or three headlines should answer: what does a family physician actually gain from this? Benefit-led headlines outperform brand-name-only headlines for cold audiences.
04
Coordinate ad creative with the landing page
The click is only the beginning. The page has to earn the conversion.
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
Every visual and message promise in the ad must be reflected within the first scroll of the landing page. A CME ad should land on the CME catalog. An FMX ad should land on the registration page. Mismatched creative and landing pages are one of the top drivers of wasted Google spend.
05
Aim for Good or Excellent asset strength before launch
Asset strength rating directly determines how aggressively Google can bid.
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
Google rates each asset group as Poor, Good, or Excellent. A Low or Poor rating restricts the campaign from competing aggressively in the auction regardless of budget. Check the rating in Google Ads before launch and add more headlines, descriptions, or image ratios until it reaches at least Good.
06
Add video assets if AAFP has existing footage
Video opens YouTube and Discover placements that image-only campaigns miss.
Hover for AAFP rec →
For AAFP
Without video, Google cannot serve on YouTube or Gmail. Even a simple 15 to 30 second cut of FMX event footage with captions and a CTA card qualifies. Horizontal 16:9 is the minimum. Square and vertical formats expand reach further.

What Google Needs from Your Creative

Creative Consistency · Asset Variety · Message Clarity

Google's system learns from what you give it. The creative team's job isn't just to make good-looking ads — it's to give Google enough variety, enough consistency, and enough clarity to optimize effectively. These three concepts explain what that looks like in practice.

01
Creative Consistency
Why resisting the urge to change things early matters

Google needs time to evaluate what you give it before it can optimize. When creative is swapped out too early, the learning process resets and performance data becomes unreliable. The first 30 days are a data-gathering window. Launching strong and holding steady is a creative discipline, not a passive choice.
For AAFPLaunch the best creative you have and commit to it for 30 days before making changes. That means every headline, description, and image needs to be right before the campaign goes live, not revised after. The pre-launch checklist exists for this reason.
02
Asset Variety
Why more creative options means better performance

Google rotates and tests combinations of headlines, descriptions, and images to find what resonates with the audience. The more genuinely different options you supply, the more signal Google can gather and the better it gets at finding the right combination for the right moment. Five headlines that all say the same thing are functionally one headline.
For AAFPWrite each headline from a different angle: one benefit, one stat, one brand, one urgency, one social proof. Same for images: at least one horizontal (1200x628px) and one square (600x600px) at minimum. Variety isn't just quantity, it's genuine creative difference.
03
Message Clarity
Why each initiative needs its own distinct creative voice

When creative for Membership, Events, CME, and FUTURE all look and sound the same, Google has no way to learn what works for each audience. Each initiative speaks to a different physician at a different stage of their relationship with AAFP. The creative has to reflect that: different visual language, different message, different CTA.
For AAFPTreat each initiative as its own creative brief. FMX creative should feel like FMX: event energy, real moments, urgency. CME creative should feel like CME: professional development, credibility, relevance to practice. FUTURE creative should speak to where a medical student is in their career, not where a practicing physician is.
How the three concepts connect
Creative Consistency means launching strong and not changing things before Google has had time to learn what works
Asset Variety gives Google the creative combinations it needs to find what resonates with each physician audience
Message Clarity ensures each AAFP initiative speaks to the right physician with the right message at the right moment

Inconsistent creative resets Google's learning. Repetitive assets give it nothing to test. Blended messaging teaches it nothing about your audience. All three need to be right for the campaign to compound its performance over time.

Tools and concepts to help AAFP go deeper on creative measurement and performance. Not required to get started but worth building into the workflow as the program matures.

01
Ad Library Research
Free competitive intelligence

Both Meta and LinkedIn maintain public libraries of every active ad on their platforms. Search by brand name and see what competitors or peer organizations are running right now, formats, copy angles, creative styles, and how long ads have been live. Look up what AMA, ACOG, or other medical associations are doing before briefing new work.

02
Paid Media Glossary
Key terms used throughout this tool
Cold Audience
Someone who has never interacted with AAFP before, no prior ad exposure, no website visit, no engagement.
Warm Audience
Someone who has shown prior interest in AAFP, visited the website, engaged with an ad, or watched a video. More likely to convert than a cold audience.
Hot Audience
Someone who has taken a high-intent action recently, visited a registration page, started a form, or attended a past AAFP event. Closest to converting and should receive the most direct CTAs.
Retargeting Audience
People who have previously visited AAFP's website, watched a video, or engaged with an ad. Encompasses both warm and hot audiences.
Frequency
The average number of times one person has seen your ad. Above 3 for cold audiences is typically a fatigue signal.
CTA (Call-to-Action)
The button or phrase that tells the viewer what to do next. Examples: Register Now, Learn More, Download the Agenda.
CPA (Cost Per Action)
How much you're paying for each conversion, registration, or lead. Also called Cost Per Result.
Ad Set
A group of ads within a campaign sharing the same audience, budget, and schedule settings.
Asset Group
Google's equivalent of an ad set in PMax campaigns. Contains all headlines, images, and descriptions.
tCPA
Target Cost Per Acquisition, a Google bidding strategy where you set a goal CPA and Google optimizes toward it.
tROAS
Target Return on Ad Spend, a Google bidding strategy where you set a revenue goal per dollar spent.
Quality Score
Google's 1–10 rating of how relevant your ad, keyword, and landing page are to a given search query.
PMax (Performance Max)
Google's campaign type that serves across all placements, Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, using AI to optimize delivery.
Attribution Window
The time period after an ad interaction in which a conversion gets credited to that ad. Common windows: 1-day click, 7-day click, 1-day view.
Hook
The opening moment of a video or image ad designed to stop the scroll and earn attention before the viewer moves on.
Creative Fatigue
The point where an audience has seen an ad so many times that engagement drops, costs rise, and the algorithm deprioritizes delivery.
Impression Share
The percentage of auctions your ad was eligible for where it actually showed. Low impression share with adequate budget usually means a relevance issue.
03
Creative Fatigue Monitoring
Early warning before performance tanks

Creative fatigue happens when your audience has seen the same ad too many times, engagement drops, costs rise, the algorithm deprioritizes delivery. Given AAFP's small addressable audience, fatigue sets in faster than most advertisers expect. Watch frequency weekly and refresh creative before the numbers tell you to.

Where to monitor Meta Ads Manager → Delivery → Frequency LinkedIn Campaign Manager → Performance tab
04
Heatmapping
Answers: "Is our CTA in the right place?"

Heatmapping records where real visitors click, scroll, and spend time on a webpage. Instead of guessing whether a landing page is working, you can see exactly where people drop off. Especially valuable for FMX and CME registration pages, if people are landing but not converting, heatmapping reveals whether they're reading or bouncing before the form.

05
UTM Tagging
Connects ad clicks to real site behavior

UTM parameters are small tags added to URLs that tell Google Analytics exactly where a click came from, platform, campaign, ad, creative. Without them, traffic from ads shows up as "direct" or "unknown." For AAFP, this answers: did the people who clicked the FMX LinkedIn ad actually register, or did they bounce?

How to build them ga-dev-tools.google.com/campaign-url-builder (free)
06
View-Through Attribution
Reveals the true halo effect of your ads

Click-through attribution misses conversions from people who saw your ad but didn't click, and later converted on their own. When AAFP runs FMX display or video ads, many physicians will see the ad, not click, and register later via organic search. Without view-through tracking, that conversion is invisible and the display campaign looks like it's failing when it's actually working.
